SELECTION  PROCESS … OCEANIA 2004

 

Preamble:

The main  tournament used for selecting trialists for New Zealand teams is the inter-regional champs.

While national champs is a tournament which has some use as a selection source, it is limited to a significant degree because only two teams per region are competing at any level.

 

Aim:    to  select the best teams possible having regard for the level of resources available.

 

Selectors/coaches

 

Step one:          Call for applications for the positions of:-

Selector

 

·        nominations to indicate the preferred grade(s)  and nominees must be available to view players

      at Inter-Regional Championships in October 2003.

·        for a nomination to be considered by NZIHA, the nomination form must be signed

      by the nominee.

               

Step two:          NZIHA Sub-Committee  Willie Harvey ( Coaching  Committee Chairperson),

 Paul van Dorsten (NZIHA Exec – Northern Region ), Kay Harris (NZIHA Exec –   Southern),  John Beardman (Central Region chairperson),

Sue Roulston ( Lower North Region Chairperson).

This Sub-Committee will:

 

·        consider nominations and make coaching appointments-  advise applicants by June

     11th 2003.  

·        appoint selection panels - each selection panel shall consist of the coach and three other selectors one of  whom is designated the convenor. As far as possible each selection panel will

·        consist of  one representative from each  region.

·        not be a family member of a trialist in the grade

 

Step three:       NZIHA advise the members of selection panels of their appointments

                     

Step four   :       Publish the names of the coach and selection panels on NZIHA website.

 

Selection of trialists

Grades:  as at 1 January 2004

 

14 and under     minimum age 12                       16 and under      minimum age 14

18 and under     minimum age  14                      20 and under      minimum age 14

Senior men        minimum age 14                       Masters 35 years of age and over

Senior women   minimum age 14                       Junior women 16 & under   - minimum age 12

 

All players must be New Zealand citizens (i.e. Eligible to hold a NZ passport)

                   

 

Step Five:           the selection panels view the players at Inter-Regional Championships. 

 

 

 

Step Six:            the selection panels meet at the end of Inter-Regionals to compile a

                       squad list.   Recommended  maximum 28 players and 4 goalies in each grade to be

                         invited to a final trial in late November/early December.

 

Step Seven:        Trial list is circulated to all clubs and is displayed on the NZIHA website.

 

Notification to trialists:

 

1.         The NZIHA secretary invites the players on the lists to final trials which will be held in late November/early December.   The invitation must give an estimate of the cost involved in competing in the Oceania Championships and must indicate the number of training camps at which attendance is compulsory.

             

2.         A  selection bond of $100 is required  for players to take part in the final trials.  This bond is refundable if the player is not selected.  If a player, once selected, withdraws from the team, except for  injury supported by a medical certificate,  the bond is not refunded. 

 

3.                In addition to the selection bond, a trial fee will be payable to cover rink rental and other costs associated with the trials.

                                                                

Trials

 

One weekend  trial for each grade to be held .  Venue:  New Plymouth (site of Oceania 2004) .

Trialists provide information on citizenship, uniform sizes, preferred numbers.

At the conclusion of the trials, convenors of selection panels in each grade will notify NZIHA of the 14 players and two goalies selected to represent New Zealand at the Oceania Championships 2004  (plus a list of three reserves - forward, defence, goalie).   The lists will be published on the NZIHA website.

 

Notification to players

 

All  trialists will be notified in writing of the selectors’ decisions.  For those who are selected to represent NZ payment for the specified cost of accommodation, meals, travel, uniform and sundry costs will be required at the latest by March 1st  2004.

 

Team officials

 

NZIHA  will call for applications for team managers and team assistants.   NZIHA sub-committee make selections.   Senior teams require a manager only;   Junior teams (i.e. 18 and under and below) require a manager and two team assistants.

 

Training camps

 

Each team to have two official training camps :- February and in March.    Team Managers attend training camps.

 

Tournaments prior to Oceania

 

Players are permitted to play in club tournaments prior to Oceania. Any injuries MUST be reported to the

NZIHA Executive Officer and to the player's coach.  Formal Medical Clearance will be required in all cases of injury. Reserves may be called upon to replace injured players at any time up to the start of Game 1 of the Oceania Championships.

 

International Team Selection 2004

 

In addition to the 8 NZ teams at the Oceania Championships in April, the following teams may be representing New Zealand on the international scene in 2004:-

 

Senior Men -  IIHF World Championships  July 2004, venue TBA (probably Germany)

Senior Women – FIRS World Championships  25 June – 1 July 2004, London, Ontario, Canada.

Junior Women (16 & under) FIRS Junior Women’s World Championships and Junior Olympics. North America. Date TBA (July/Aug)

Junior Men  (18 & under) -  Global Inline Festival, Canada. Dates TBA (July/Aug)

 

Oceania Championships will have the dual purposes of:-

  •  providing top class  trans-Tasman competition with the aim of regaining the Tasman Cup and
  • providing valuable match practice for NZ players competing in the mid-season international events.

     New Zealand  international representatives will be selected

     from players in the New Zealand teams at the Oceania

     Championships.
